All the Right Moves
Mike Morris, home magazine editor and book author, has moved to many
homes. The average American moves to a new home 13 times in a
lifetime. When it's time for you to pack up and go, he offers the
following suggestions:
|
*
|
Not everyone hires a professional mover. On average,
do-it-yourself movers can save up to 50 percent on cross-country
reallocations, and up to 30 percent on local moves.
|
*
|
If your company is paying to relocate you, you shouldn't have to
worry about the cost. But watch closely to ensure that
everything the movers handle is boxed, tagged and delivered
carefully.
|
*
|
Packing is usually included with trucking costs. But even if
you don't opt for the big moving van, you can hire professionals to
help pack and load a rental truck.
|
*
|
Most moves are made between May and September (and usually during
last 10 days of the month). Big moving companies and rental
truck outfits price accordingly. If you want to save, pick a
different date, and ask for the off-season rate.
|
*
|
Start organizing and packing well in advance of your actual moving
date-a month is not too far ahead if you're moving your entire
household.
|
|
*
|
Keep your own inventory of everything packed, whether you're moving
yourself or hiring a moving company. Mark all boxes with their
contents; inventory labels can be purchased at stationery stores or
from moving companies.
|
*
|
Moving companies and truck rental outfits also can be a good source
of supplies. Many rent or sell hand trucks and dollies, strong
cartons, moving blankets, and unprinted newsprint paper for
wrapping, blocking and filling carton space around breakable
objects.
|
*
|
Rent-a-truck dealers have charts that equate the size of their
trucks with the size of rooms and their typical contents. Tell
them you have a living room, dining room and two bedrooms, and
they'll roll out a vehicle that can carry it all.

Truckers and movers provide free information booklets-filled with
professional tips and tricks like these-that can help you pack, ship
and move with confidence.
